INSPIRATION

This Aiionwatha (Hiawatha) ring design was first made by me in 2010, to honor the Kaianerekowa (The Great Law) and the League of Nations. This design has relevance in our daily lives and is a reminder of the natural law.

WHAT GOES INTO IT

This piece is made of solid Sterling Silver and crushed Wampum (Quahog) shell. This design typically takes 2.5 hours to hand make (construct with only hand tools) and clean before filing and polishing. Polishing typically takes (30-45 minutes) before it's cleaned and packed for shipping (another 20 minutes). As with all of my work, it gets several smudges for the intended wearer of the piece and is included in Thanks Giving Addresses.

SIGNIFICANCE

The link under "inspiration" above is a good video to give you the 'gist' of this symbol's significance. There's much more on the  web if you search "The Great Law of the Haudenosaunee" for a clearer idea of how important this design is and it's relevance to not just the Haudenosaunee, but to the origin of the United States and the natural laws of living on this planet together.

I believe that this epitomizes how to live a good life, in relationships and with others around you. This ring carries the strong significance that comes with Wampum shells, as well as the aforementioned design purpose. The purple section of a shell makes up less than 1/4 of total shell. When used in my jewelry, it represents the strength and commitment of the design as well as the wearer to their character.

UNIQUENESS

My methods are primarily traditional in this design. And although not a unique design, it carries the deep meaning of mutual respect and soul with it as with all of my Wampum work. The soulfulness of Wampum and Silver is what I have the utmost respect and consideration for during the construction process.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

This piece can be polished with a soft toothbrush and a non-grit toothpaste. As with all inlaid jewelry, normal care should be taken not to drop or damage the piece. These are strong pieces, with the highest quality inlay possible, but silver is still a soft metal and deforms/scratches fairly easily. To reduce tarnishing and damage I recommend keeping this piece in the plastic bag provided when not being worn, and not wearing this piece during laborious work (such as construction).
